Remove Smart Security

Smart Security is a rogue anti-spyware application cloned from the well-known malware Security Tool. Similarly to its relative, Smart Security tries to trick the user into paying for the license of the software. This malware application gets installed via Trojans that get delivered to users as attachments to spam emails or get downloaded from malicious websites. Once installed, Smart Security begins to perform endless fake security scans on the system, returning results that show that the computer is under threat from many non-existent malicious programs. It also displays and endless stream of fake warning pop-ups from the Windows taskbar warning about how much of the threat the user’s system is facing. The aim of all this activity is to try and trick the user into purchasing a software license for the ‘full’ version of Smart Security by claiming that the currently installed ‘trial’ version is insufficient to completely scan the system. System Security puts this request forward through its very authentic-looking GUI, through the warning pop-ups, and at the end of each fake scan. However, it must be noted that the so-called ‘full’ version is just as incapable of scanning or cleaning out any malware from any computer system as the ‘trial’ version is.

As soon as you find a copy of this malicious software installed on your computer, you should take steps to delete Smart Security. Due to the fact that Smart Security removal involves the stopping of processes, the deletion of files and folders and the removal of registry entries it is recommended to act extreme caution while engaging into manual removal of this fake security application.

Manual Smart Security File Removal Procedures

The first step you need to take in order to remove Smart Security is to stop the following process:

•    smartsecurity.exe

In most cases you can not use the Windows Task Manager because it is disabled.  When this is the case you can boot into safe mode and simply delete the file there.  Your other option is to go to the file location “%programfiles%\smart security\smartsecurity.exe”  and then re-name the SmartSecurity.exe file to anything you want.  Then re-boot your computer.  Upon re-boot you should then be able to delete the file.

The next step in Smart Security removal is to delete the following files and folders:

•    %programfiles%\smart security\smartsecurity.exe
•    %commondesktop%\smart security.lnk
•    %commonprograms%\smart security\smart security.lnk

Once the above two steps have been completed it is recommended to scan the entire computer using genuine antivirus software using genuine antivirus software such as Spyware Doctor with Antivirus.

Registry Removal Procedures

File removal alone is not sufficient to completely remove Smart Security. In order to ensure complete Smart Security removal, it is necessary to delete the following entry from the registry as well:

•    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Smart Security

Once the registry has been cleaned, you have completely gotten rid of Smart Security.  However you most likely still have several trojans or other viruses installed on your computer and that is why you will still need to run a full virus scan to make sure nothing is left on the computer.

Conclusion

Inexperienced users are advised against attempting to delete Smart Security manually, as any mistake made during removal could result in damage to the operating system. Therefore inexperienced users are advised to use a web-based repair service such as www.onlinecomputerrepair.org or legitimate antivirus software to completely and safely remove Smart Security.
